What is Algebra?

What Is Algebra?

Algebra is a branch of mathematics that helps us solve problems using symbols and numbers. Instead of always working with specific numbers, algebra lets us use letters (like x or y) to represent unknown values. This makes it easier to solve problems where we don’t yet know all the numbers.

Think of algebra like a puzzle: if you know part of the information, you can use algebra to figure out the missing piece.

What Do the Letters in Algebra Mean?

The letters in algebra are called variables. A variable is just a placeholder for a number that you don’t know yet—or that could change.

For example, imagine someone says:

“I’m thinking of a number. If I add 3 to it, I get 10.”

You can write this as:

x + 3 = 10

Here, x is the variable—it stands for the number the person is thinking of. To solve this:

x + 3 = 10
x = 10 - 3
x = 7

Variables are useful because they let us describe relationships. Let’s say you earn $10 every week from chores. If w is the number of weeks, then your total earnings can be written as:

Total = 10w

So if you worked for 3 weeks, you made:

10w = 10 × 3 = $30

Variables can change from problem to problem. In one situation, x could be how many books you read. In another, x might be how many miles you walk. What matters is how the variable fits into the equation.

Real-World Example: Saving Money

Imagine you want to buy a video game that costs $60. You already saved $20 and plan to save $10 every week. How many weeks (w) will it take?

20 + 10w = 60

Now solve it:

10w = 60 - 20
10w = 40
w = 40 ÷ 10
w = 4

So it will take 4 weeks to save enough money.

Why Algebra Matters

Algebra shows up in everyday life more than you might think. It helps with budgeting, planning trips, building things, and even cooking. It trains your brain to think logically and find patterns.

Even if you’ve never taken an algebra class, you’ve probably used algebra-like thinking. If you’ve ever figured out how long it’ll take to save money, or how to split a bill evenly, that’s algebra in action!

In Summary

Algebra is a way to solve problems using letters (called variables) to stand in for unknown numbers. These variables help us describe relationships, write formulas, and figure out missing information. Once you understand how they work, algebra becomes a powerful tool for everyday thinking and problem-solving.

Now that you know what algebra is and how variables work, you’re ready to take the next step: learning how to build and work with algebraic expressions and equations. In the next article, we’ll explore how to write expressions, combine like terms, and solve equations using what you’ve just learned.
